When it comes to performance at sea, Suzuki Marine has always been synonymous with innovation, efficiency and control. And our latest test on one of the most interesting boats in the Nuova Jolly Marine range, the NJ 850 XL, has once again confirmed the sporty and refined DNA of the Japanese manufacturer.

During the Suzuki Motor Fest 2025 in Misano Adriatico, we had the opportunity to test one of the flagship models of the Nuova Jolly Marine fleet. The boat, which is 8.73 metres long and 3.30 metres wide, is the largest in the NJ line but remains surprisingly easy to transport thanks to its deflatable tubes. Approved in category B for 16 people, it is designed to guarantee performance, comfort and safety even in challenging sea conditions.suzuki DF200 5

Suzuki Marine DF200 V6 engines: responsiveness and fuel consumption under control

The Suzuki Marine DF200 V6, which we tested in a twin installation on the NJ 850 XL, recently won the Top Products Award 2025 from Boating Industry Magazine, one of the most authoritative American publications in the nautical sector. An award that comes in the very year that Suzuki Marine celebrates the 60th anniversary of its entry into the world of outboards, which occurred in 1965 with the launch of the first D55 model.

The award-winning engine is a reliable and generous 3.6-litre, 24-valve, 4-stroke V6, updated for 2025 with substantial technical improvements: a new grille with an advanced filtering system to separate water spray and particulates, the Multi-Stage Induction system for optimised combustion at all revs, and technologies derived from the automotive sector such as the Suzuki Keyless Start System and Suzuki Automatic Trim.

The two DF200 internal combustion engines installed on the NJ 850 XL are among the workhorses of the Suzuki Marine range. These engines are lightweight and compact, yet capable of delivering impressive torque in a progressive and consistent manner. During our trip, the boat planed decisively in just a few seconds, maintaining a stable and dry trim even in rough seas.

The twin 200 hp engines guarantee a top speed of over 45 knots, with an ideal cruising speed of around 28-30 knots, perfect for long journeys without tiring either the crew or the boat.

The current version also includes features designed for the most demanding fishermen and boaters, such as Troll Mode for fine control of the idle speed, and the SDSM+ system, which allows engine parameters to be read directly from a smartphone.

The 200 HP V6 joins the more compact DF200A 4-cylinder in-line engine in the range, offering shipyards and private owners a choice of two engines depending on the characteristics of the boat. “With the new V6 version, we have responded concretely to our customers’ requests,” said Brandon Cerka, Vice President of Suzuki Marine USA, emphasising how this success further strengthens Suzuki’s leadership in the high-end medium-power outboard market.Suzuki DF200 2

NJ 850 XL: a dinghy that looks like a boat

But now, let’s talk a little about the vessel that houses the two Suzuki DF200 engines: the Nuova Jolly 850 XL is designed to combine comfort, performance and Italian-made build quality. The feeling on board is that of a boat over 10 metres long thanks to the optimisation of space: a dinette that can be converted into a sun deck, an ergonomic console with carbon panel, modular stern platforms, large lockers… and much more that we will describe shortly.

The distinctive feature of the NJ 850 XL is its extraordinary Hi-Power hull, designed with a deep V that starts at 23° at the stern and reaches 60° at the bow. A geometry developed to tackle even large waves without ever compromising safety or comfort on board. A central plate at the rear of the fairing promotes gliding by reducing friction and fuel consumption, while the hybrid nose cone, with integrated retractable chain guide, offers clean aesthetics and practical functionality, eliminating any visible clutter.

The hull is constructed using cross-laminated fibreglass “Rowing Mat”, a technical solution that ensures superior structural rigidity, durability and extraordinary seaworthiness. It is a boat designed for long voyages, even in challenging conditions, where every detail has been engineered with precision.

In keeping with Nuova Jolly tradition, the materials are of the highest quality: the tubes are made of 1670 decitex ORCA® Neoprene-Hypalon, resistant to UV rays and hydrocarbons, while the cushions are made of Italian nautical fabrics, with a customisable colour range to suit every aesthetic taste. The hull paintwork can also be customised, creating a truly unique boat.

Design and distribution of spaces on board

Designed to accommodate up to 16 people, the NJ 850 XL surprises with its spaciousness on board, comparable to that of a 10.5-metre boat. The layout of the NJ 850 XL has been carefully designed to strike a balance between liveability, functionality and style. At first glance, the sleek and elegant lines are striking, with a sporty but never aggressive profile that recalls the tradition of Mediterranean maxi-ribs. The aft cockpit is well protected and features a horseshoe-shaped dinette, complete with a central table that can be folded down to transform it into a sunbathing area.

The control area is central, well positioned to offer excellent visibility and control. The modern, minimalist console features a carbon instrument panel, wraparound windscreen with stainless steel grab rail and ample space for installing the latest generation of electronics. Underneath the console is access to the toilet compartment, with a chemical toilet and useful space for changing or storing personal belongings.

At the bow, space takes centre stage: the 2×2 metre XXL sun deck is ideal for relaxing in total comfort, even with 3-4 people at the same time. The side walkway is comfortable, the gangways are wide and well protected by handrails, enhancing safety when sailing.

The Flexiteek flooring, numerous lockers with gas springs, customisable stern platforms to accommodate engines of different sizes, and the option of adding a roll bar with integrated awning complete an interior design focused on comfort without sacrificing performance.

Sea trial: Suzuki Marine DF200 + NJ850XL

This morning in Portoverde (Cattolica), a little gem in the heart of Romagna, rehearsals began for the Suzuki Motor Fest 2025, part of which is also dedicated to recreational boating.

It is a sunny morning, though not very warm. Two other journalists and I are getting ready to board the Nuova Jolly 850 XL with twin Suzuki Marine DF200 engines, V6s that promise to exceed all expectations in terms of torque and response speed… and we can’t wait to hear them in action!

We leave the harbour at a slow speed, and I see that a few knots of Scirocco wind have picked up, creating small but steep waves of 20 to 30 centimetres off the coast of Riccione, which are a bit annoying as they cause the hull to bang against the waves.

After conducting the speed and fuel consumption tests, it is my turn, and I take control of the controls.

I shift into gear, and immediately notice something unusual in the response of the controls. The engines are controlled by throttles and mechanical steering, a choice that keeps the system simple and straightforward, but on a boat of this category, one might wish for a more modern electronic system, especially in terms of sensitivity and precision when changing gears.

There is also the option of electro-hydraulic handbrakes and steering, which I honestly prefer, as it provides a smoothness and precision that is impossible to achieve with the mechanical system.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, this choice somewhat compromised the NJ 850 XL test, which, with a different choice, would most likely have been even more exceptional.

However, beyond that, as soon as I engage the gear, I feel the thrust of the two Suzuki Marine DF200 V6 engines which, without making too much noise, propel the boat to 11 knots, the speed at which the hull leaves the water and the dinghy begins to plane.

I’m travelling at a speed of 25 knots, I make a turn to the right, against the sea and the wind, but the Nuova Jolly 850 XL remains steady and cuts through every small wave with precision and solidity.

At 35 knots, the NJ 850 XL sails smoothly thanks to its deep V-shaped Hi-Power hull, conveying a sense of absolute control in every turn, even at these speeds. On board, both myself in the helm and the other passengers always felt safe, even at high speeds of up to 47 knots, which was the maximum speed reached during our test.

The new Jolly 850 XL is undoubtedly a boat designed to withstand incredible speeds, unfavourable sailing conditions and entire days at sea in good company, satisfying every desire and request of the owner thanks to its extraordinary hull and Suzuki Marine DF200 engines, which make everything more dynamic and enjoyable. But the most surprising thing is how liveable it is: it feels like being on a 10-metre boat, with the added advantage of being able to trailer it.

Proof that engineering can also be exciting when driven by passion.suzuki DF200 5
